Abstract
In transportation an increasing international competition, a growing complexity in planning, shorter planning periods and changes in freight rates, especially in road freight traffic, call for new innovative problem solving methods. Usually, various organisational units are involved in problem solving: single vehicles, carriers, forwarding agencies or any kind of business combinations. Multi-Agent-Systems (MAS) are able to use local competence and capacities in order to achieve a global goal - in this context an efficient allocation of transport capacities. This paper focuses on coordination mechanisms for electronic markets concerning their ability to support decentralised problem solving in the domain of transportation. The Vickrey auction turns out to be a common basis for all coordination mechanisms introduced in this work.
