Abstract
The effect of Orobanche crenata infection on faba bean growth and development was studied in a greenhouse experiment. The host plants were grown in pots with four different O. crenata seed densities. At 10-15 day intervals, the dry weights of various faba bean organs and O. crenata were determined. The biomass accumulation in infected faba bean plants was significantly lower than that of uninfected controls. In all treatments, however, the lower biomass of parasitised plants was accounted for by the dry weight of O. crenata, and no significant loss of photosynthates was observed from the host-parasite associations. Dry matter partitioning between O. crenata, as an additional sink, and faba bean organs was closely related to the developmental stages of both parasite and its host plant. When the bud stage of O. crenata coincided with the onset of flowering in faba bean, the host plants could not set any pods containing seeds. The results are discussed with reference to implications for the development of Orobanche control strategies.
