Abstract
In the course of a research study in Namibia it was found that conventional methods for the assessment of semi-arid and arid pasture grounds were not adequat. Thereupon the need arose to develop a method which, appropriated to the demands of a running research program, could be considered as transferable combined with general validity and facilitated application. Above that, environmental variations and a progressive approach to achieve causal research patterns was taken into account. The development of the area-transect enables us to meet these conditions.
