Abstract
Three analytical models for the interactions between epidemics of Erysiphe graminis and Septoria nodorum, two diseases which frequently occur concurrently in wheat, are introduced and evaluated with literature data of a two-year field trial and a greenhouse experiment. Two minimal interaction models consist of modified Lotka-Volterra equations for total disease severity with rate, capacity (= maximum severity), and interaction parameters. An extended interaction model additionally describes infectious and postinfectious compartments of Septoria. S. nodorum is considered as competing with E. graminis for infection sires and is, therefore, linked to its density regulation term in ail three interaction models. The positive effect of E. graminis on S. nodorum is modelled with two different approaches. it is assumed firstly that E. graminis increases final Septoria severity, and secondly that E. graminis increases a Septoria race parameter. Thus, in the second approach, E. graminis increases the apparent infection rare of Septoria in the minimal model and the rate parameter for infectious tissue in the extended interaction model, respectively. Good models fits with non-zero interaction coefficients were obtained for greenhouse and field data. However, for the 1990 field data, the interaction coefficients were nor significantly different from zero, which is possibly due to the extremely low severity of E. graminis in this experiment. Compared to logistic growth, parameter sensitivity for the most appropriate model for the field data - both pathogens linked via their density regulation terms differs greatly. Possible consequences for the appropriateness of monospecific control thresholds in integrated disease management are discussed.
