Abstract

Two plant Protection systems associated with the cultivation of potatoes in the highlands of the Republic of Panama which differed in their managing intensity were investigated with regard co their effects on soil microbial activities. The investigat ions were carried out for 4 months in a field experiment. The effects of the pesticide treatments were estimated by the determination of soil respiration (CO2 production) without additional substrate, dehydrogenase activity (TTC reduction) and ammonium oxidation (as a measure of the nitrification activity) in the upper 5 cm soil layer.

Both pesticide treatment systems were inhibitory to the three activities, Dehydrogenase activity and ammonium oxidation were drastically reduced, particularly at the end of the experiment, whereas the inhibitions of soil respiration were less marked. The less intensive treatment caused only temporary inhibitions of ammonium oxidation, while the more intensive treatment resulted in increasing reductions in the course of rime. In contrast, dehydrogenase activity hardly reflected the different intensities of the two plant protection systems.
