The objective of the study was to determine whether infections of plants, inoculated with the VA-mycorrhiza fungi isolates T6 and D13, were altered by sewage sludge treatments. In pot experiments the development of the mycorrhizal fungus into the host as a pattern of the infectivity was evaluated by different plants on 2 soils. According to a different heavy metal deposition due to the treatments, application of sludge leads to a declining effect on the mycorrhizal infection in both soils. A single amendmend of sludge to the soil Kleinlinden reduced the infection of the roots to 70 % in the case of barley. Corn was less sensitive with a drop of 32 %, while oat as a successive crop had non significant decrease. In general, we obtained the highest reducing effect with the low application rate, so that a higher sludge fertilization had no additional dropping effects. The decline of infection was more targeted to the relative occurrence of vesicles than to the arbuscles. On the soil Munchen with a long years sludge application and therefore a high heavy metal contamination, there was a successful mycorrhization, nevertheless a lower infectivity was noted than on the soil Kleinlinden. It was found, that the increased concentration of several heavy metals in the roots were related to a reduced mycorrhizal infection.
