Abstract
The reaction of tellurium with WCl6 in the presence of bromine in a sealed evacuated ampoule in the temperature range from 220 to 150 degrees C yields dark blue monoclinic crystals of beta-Te4(WCl6)(2), space group P2(1)/c, lattice constants a = 664,3(2), b = 1273,2(3), c = 1233,6(3) pm, beta = 94,13(3)degrees. The structure is built of square planar Te-4(2+) cations and slightly distorted octahedral WCl6- anions and shows a close relationship to the previously reported triclinic alpha-form, which was obtained in the absence of bromine. The difference between the two structures lies in a different packing of the ions.
