Abstract

This paper describes the experience with the use of ultrasound in diseases of the urogenital tract, the gastrointestinal tract and the heart in birds. Sonographic examination was performed in avian patients of the Clinic for Avian Diseases in the last two years.

Physiological appearence of the organs as well as some cases of frequently diagnosed pathological alterations are described. With this diagnostic tool cysts or tumors of the kidneys and the ovary as well as egg binding may be seen. In different diseases of the gastrointestinal tract we found thickening of the wall. Hydropericard is a commonly seen pathological alteration of the heart.

The advantages and disadvantages of the sonographic examination in the diagnosis of diseases of the urogenital and gastrointestinal tract and the heart as well as in useful combination with other diagnostic tools are discussed.
