Abstract:
Test results on nitrogen input and nitrogen extraction for soils with varied productivity but under identical cultivation are illustrated by an example of a nitrate-polluted watershed in North Hesse. Increased nitrate leaching usually follows excessive fertilizing of poor soils with low productivity. The applied nitrogen is not utilized by the plants and suffers increased susceptibility to leaching into the ground water. The available water capacity (AWC) in the root zone is a complex indicator characterizing both the soil's susceptibility to nitrate leaching and its productivity as part of the soil's moisture balance. This indicator thus seems suitable as a basis for judging a site's inherent properties and consequently for determining location-adapted utilization of the land. On the basis of these findings, a programme to reduce nitrate lixiviation through site-adapted agriculture is presented with examples.
