Abstract
Part of the humoral defence mechanisms of insect haemolymph are enzymes and microbiocidal factors which are either normally present or are synthesised following contact with non-protein molecules. There is some evidence that insects are capable of producing specific proteins, after exposure to antigens, which resemble immunoglobulins produced by higher order animals. The effectiveness of the immune response depends on the virulence of the agents, the genetic resistance mechanisms of the host and on environmental factors.
