Abstract
The general, non-specific defence mechanisms of insects are described with specific examples. The efficiency of these mechanisms do influence the defence capabilities of insects when exposed to immunogenically active substances. In addition to these non-specific mechanisms, which include mechanical, chemical and physiological barriers, also utilise cellular factors to effect a defence. There is a clear connection between the non-specific mechanisms and the physiological processes. Phagocytosis, a non-specific defence mechanism, is very important in insects as it is in higher order animals.
