Abstract
Germination of Phacelia tanacetifolia BENTH. Seeds of different varieties, provenances and age (altogether 19 seed samples) was tested using the petri dish method. About 30 % of the samples germinated at 20-degrees-C to not more than 40 % in light and to not more than 70 % in dark. This dormancy could be broken by applying low temperatures of 0-degrees-C to 5-degrees-C. High germination of more than 80 % in light as well as in dark was found for about 50 % of the samples; light sensitivity was only small. Germination did not correlate with seed mass; but germination was related to seed age. Seeds which were younger than 1 year were more dormant compared to seeds which were 2 to 6 years old. The influence of different germination temperatures and osmotic potentials (solutions of Polyethylene Glycol 6000) was tested using 2 samples of different dormancy (weakly/strongly dormant). At 30-degrees-C germination was nearly completely suppressed. Seeds of the strongly dormant sample were more sensitive to increased temperature (20-degrees-C instead of 10-degrees-C) and water stress (-0.5 and -0.1 instead of 0 MPa) compared to the weakly dormant sample. It is assumed that germinability of Phacelia tanacetifolia, which was shown to differ widely for different seed samples, is an important reason for the variation of emergence of green manure crops in practical farming.
