Abstract:
The detector system TAPS (two/three arm photon spectrometer) has been designed and brought into operation in order to study high energy photons as well as neutral mesons which are produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions or photonuclear reactions, respectively. At present the spectrometer comprises 320 individual plastic-BaF2 telescopes. Each spectrometer arm can carry two detector blocks (64 modules) and is movable around the target location at variable distance. The concept, the quality of the 25 cm long hexagonal BaF2 crystals and the response to photons and particles over a wide energy range are discussed. Owing to the excellent time resolution and the optional analysis of the intrinsic pulse shape, BaF2 appears to be the most appropriate scintillator material for our experimental program.
