The nitrate contents of dry powder from 55 different plant, mushroom and algae species were determined by means of the ion-selective electrode method. In addition to different extracting media (distilled water, 1 % copper sulfate, 1 % and 5 % potassium aluminum sulfate) and different sample quantities, increasing amounts (from 1 ml to 17 ml) of ionic strength adjustor (0.9 M aluminum sulfate, 0.01 M silver sulfate) were added to 15 ml sample extracts and nitrate standard solutions. The nitrate content was measured after every addition. Quantitative nitrate determination especially for leaves or needles from tree species required the addition of PVPP (polyvinylpolypyrrolidone) to the extractant. Additions of PVPP may remove phenolic compounds which otherwise interfere with the measurements. Detailed analytical procedures for nitrate determination in various materials are described. Comparative studies of the nitrate-selective electrode, Cd-reduction and bacteriological methods gave good agreement for nitrate values. Regardless of the method used, however the estimated nitrate values below 150 mg/kg DM showed considerable variation and therefore should be interpreted with caution.
