Abstract
Between 1986 and 1989, yearly sampling of large barley powdery mildew populations was carried out in Hessen (FRG) and in 1987 for comparison also in Schleswig-Holstein (FRG). These populations were grown for several conidial generations (8-12) in a growth chamber (18-degrees-C +/- 2-degrees, day length 14 h, light intensity 11000 lx, relative humidity 90 % +/- 5 %). The dynamics of races and of fungicide resistance was monitored. In 1986 and 1989, an increase of the ED50 values for triadimefon could be proved under the influence of this fungicide. It could be shown that a higher fungicide concentration could accelerate the selection in comparison to a lower concentration. But in the case that no subpopulations with measurable fungicide resistance are within the initial populations, neither the low or the high fungicide concentration results in a successful selection. The increase of ED50 values for triadimefon was in 1986 correlated with the frequency of race 23 and in 1989 with race 291. In the population of Schleswig-Holstein, race 15 was selected. Under the influence of ethirimol, the ED50 for this fungicide increased significantly. But the level of the ED50 was here correlated with several races which were rare in the controls and under triadimefon treatment. The correlations between the frequency of races of Erysiphe graminis D.C. f. sp. hordei and the fungicide resistance in the populations will be discussed in detail.
