Abstract:
We investigate dynamical polarizations of the Dirac sea within a one-dimensional model of the Walecka type by comparing collisions within the no-sea approximation with those including the Dirac sea up to a cutoff in momentum of 1.3 GeV/c which is mandatory fora proper convergence of densities in the fully relativistic theory. Apart from a renormalization of coupling constants due to the Dirac-sea polarizations by about 30% we find a surprising amount of stopping at intermediate-energy collisions which is not present in the mean-field theory within the no-sea limit and can be related to a transfer of energy from relative motion to internal excitations of the system. The actual magnitude of this energy transfer, however, is small compared to the stopping by residual nucleon-nucleon collisions and is hardly expected to be observable in experiment.
