Abstract

(KNa)K[MnO4] has been prepared for the first time as blue-green orthorhombic single crystals by heating mixtures of the appropriate oxides (K2O2, Na2O2 and LiMnO4; K:Na:Mn = 1.2:1.3:1; Ag cylinder; 580-degrees-C, 66 days).

The structure determination (four-circle diffractometer; Mo Ka; for all 618 I0(hkl) R = 10.2% and R(w) = 3.8%; space group Fddd (no. 70) confirms the presence of an unusual elpasolith variation corresponding to (KNa)K[MnO4]. Guinier-Simon data gave a = 1044.4(2) pm; b = 1126.0(3) pm; c = 1698.9(3) pm; Z = 16.

The Madelung part of the lattice energy MAPLE and the effective coordination numbers ECoN, derived from the mean fictive ionic radii MEFIR, together with the charge distribution are calculated and discussed.
