Abstract
Dark red cuboid single crystals of Cs2Na2[IrO4] have been prepared for the first time by heating well-ground mixtures of CSO0.52, Na2O2, IrO2 and iridium powder in the molar proportions 3.52:1.30:1.00:1.00 (Ag-bomb; 760-degrees-C; 46 days). The crystals are monoclinic; space group C2/m; a = 1192.49(14) pm, b = 590.82(6) pm; c = 960.37(12) pm; beta = 104.27(1)-degrees; Z = 4. Data refinement gave R = 4.32%; R(w) = 4.14% (1056 independent I0(hkl) out of 7710 measured; four-circle diffractometer Siemens AED 2; Mo K-alpha). 2/infinity[Na(1)2Na(2)2Ir(2)O8]8- layers are characteristic of CS2Na2[IrO4]. Effective coordination numbers ECoN, mean fictive ionic radii MEFIR and the Madelung part of the lattice energy MAPLE, as well as the charge distribution and bond strength are calculated and discussed.
