Abstract

This paper examines the influence of venous filling pressure on contraction force and rate of the isolated and perfused branchial heart of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis.

The results indicate that branchial hearts are able to adjust to increasing volume loads in the sense of a FRANK-STARLING-mechanism. Input pressure has a direct effect upon pressure amplitude and frequency, the perfusion level ranging between 0.4 and 2.0 kPa.

Heart activity is strongly dependent to temperature. The Q10 for heart rate at 15 - 25-degrees-C is 3.2.

Blood pressure recordings in anesthetized animals reveal a hydrostatic branchial heart pressure of 0.1 kPa in diastole and 0.37 kPa in systole. Considering relevant literature the validity of these data is discussed.
