Abstract

Roe deer mtDNA was characterized by restriction analysis, nucleotide sequencing and PCR. Two RFLPs constituting three haplotypes were detected among ten animals. A restriction map was constructed and related to the gen map. The base sequence of the D-loop region was determined completely and compared to the bovine sequence. On the basis of this comparison the evolutionary divergence time between both species was estimated to be 12-24 million years.

This study may encourage further work on roe deer mtDNA variation with regard to population structure analysis and wildlife management.
