Abstract
Using chromatographic methods, two substances with IGR-properties were purified from alcoholic extracts of the seed kernels of the marrango tree, Azadirachta excelsa. It could Se confirmed by NMR-data that one of them is azadirachtin, already known from the neem tree Azadirachta indica A. Juss. The other substance, which we designate as marrangin, was not known until now. Both compounds were compared in their bioefficacy on the fourth instar larvae of the Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis Muls. Bioassays revealed that marrangin was clearly more active than azadirachtin. The possible relationship between bioefficacy and molecular structure is discussed. The symptoms caused by marrangin were identical to those of azadirachtin.
