Abstract
The historical development of today's EUF nitrogen fertilizer recommendation is described. After starting with the determination of the EUF nitrate fraction alone the analysis of the EUF N(org) fraction was introduced in the early 1980's, and later on the EUF N(org) 80-degrees-C/20-degrees-C quotient was found to be of importance. All three components are now used for the calculation of the EUF N fertilizer recommendation for sugar beets on the basis of a multiple regression equation. The experiences with the EUF recommendations to beets are reviewed in the second part. Reduced amounts of nitrogen by consequently taking the N supply of the soil into account led to an increase in sugar yield in Austria and southern Germany. Similar results are reported from Hungary. After being sceptical at the beginning farmers fully accepted the EUF system resulting on average in higher financial returns at less fertilizer expenses. This could also be proved in field trials in Ireland. Introduction of the EUF system not only led to an increase in sugar contents in the beets, but also to a decline in the contents of alpha-amino N, K and Na. A positive effect on the environment was proved by reduced amounts of nitrate in the soil after harvest of the beets. EUF based fertilizer recommendations meanwhile are successfully applied in many European countries for sugar beets as well as for other crops.
