The fauna of the vegetation zone of winter wheat fields of an alternative, "bio-dynamic" farm and of two conventional (high input) in Hesse was compared. The samples of insects were obtained weekly from May to July by using a portable suction trap. In six fields, 6614 thrips belonging to 18 species were caught. The number of thrips from the fields of the bio-dynamic" farm was nearly twice as high as that from the conventionally managed farms. Predaceous thrips, Aeolothrips intermedius, were very common in "bio-dynamic" fields but rare in conventional fields. The numeric relation between predacious thrips and phytophagous species as their prey was 1:20 in alternatively managed fields and 1:422 in high input fields. The reason for the high numbers of predaceous thrips in the fields of the "bio-dynamic" farm was probably the presence of numerous weeds. The effects of predaceous on phytophagous thrips are discussed.
