Abstract:
Surplus production of arable farming in the European Community requires a reduction in farming intensity. Farmers are therefore incited to join set aside and extensification programs. This paper reviews the effects of extensive arable farming on the environment of the agricultural landscape. Extensification measures concerning fertilization, plant protection, tillage, crop rotation and landscaping are differentiated. The effects of these measures on soil, water, flora and fauna are shown and evaluated with regard to particular ecological aims. Finally, suggestions are made how extensification programs should be managed and which parts of extensive farming should be introduced in practice from an ecological point of view.
