Abstract

In a field study, the infestation of cherry hybrids by Myzus cerasi F. was investigated during 4 years. The maximum infestation is judged as a parameter for susceptibility resp. resistance. Many cherry-like Prunus-species are suitable as primary host plants for Myzus cerasi. The most important hosts are P. avium and P. cerasus. Other species are colonized merely by chance.

Hybrids between and within the sections of Eucerasus and Pseudocerasus are suitable if one parent is P. avium or P. cerasus. Species and Hybrids of the section Pseudocerasus are colonized rarely. Within the section Eucerasus, the species P. fruticosa is relatively resistant to M. cerasi.

About 5-10 % of hybrids of P. avium x P. cerasus (out of 143) were not or slightly infested by M. cerasi. This indicates that aphid resistance is established in cherry trees, so that breeding of cherry trees for aphid resistance seems promising.
