Abstract
The contents of mineralizable organic nitrogen (EUF N(org)) of the top soils of 32,000 sugar beet sites of Southern Germany varied between 40 and 160 kg N/ha in summer 1990, averaging at 75 kg N/ha. The amounts of nitrate in the same samples differed much less, the mean being 58 kg N/ha. Therefore the measurement of EUF N(org) is both useful and necessary. The ratio between the EUF N(org) fractions at 80-degrees-C and 20-degrees-C (EUF N(org) quotient) highly correlated with the lime status of the soils (r = 0.97). A positive relationship could also be found between the organic matter content and the EUF N(org) quotients because the top soils higher in organic matter content than the subsoils measured the higher EUF N(org) quotients, too. It is concluded that the EUF N(org) quotients must therefore be a result of the lime and organic matter content of a certain soil. The better the lime and organic matter status of a soil the better are the condition for N mineralization. The EUF N(org) quotients proved to strongly correlate with the nitrate contents of the soils (r = 0.98). The EUF nitrate and N(org) contents together with the EUF N(org) quotients can therefore be used to characterize the conditions for N mineralization in the soil and give valuable information for sound N fertilizer recommendations.
