The investigations aimed to analyse the characteristic reaction of high performance foddergrass-species (Lolium multiflorum, Loium X boucheanum, Lolium perenne and Dactylis glomerata) considering the dynamics of nitrate in soil in dependence on sward-density and N-fertilization (0-200-400-600 kg N. ha-1 . yr-1). Supplementary to this cutting experiment the influence of a varied N-supply (0-160-320 kg N. ha-1 . yr-1) on the nitrate amounts under a low performance permanent pasture should be determined. Lolium perenne showed with high N-doses and independent of time the least nitrate amounts. Whereas the not-perennial species reacted especially on weather factors, Dactylis glomerata was influenced in the N-utilization most by the age of the sward. While in the top layers the nitrate quantities were varied principally by N-fertilization, the influence of the species was dominant in the lower layers. Closed swards of high fertilized Lolium multiflorum and Dactylis glomerata left less nitrate amounts in the soil than open swards. On the low performance pasture high N-doses caused a high nitrate accumulation in all soil layers. The spreading of Elymus repens lead to an understocking which in connection with missing aftermowing caused less N-uptake. The investigations show that with the usage of high N-doses there should be paid more attention to the sward quality - main species, sward density, pasture maintenance - regarding an optimal N-utilization.
