Abstract:
Only 670 square metres of Land are available per head of the population for food production in China; in the year 2000 even this figure will have declined to a mere 400 square metres per head. This situation calls for especially intensive farming of the land. The area surrounding the district won of MIYI in the province of SICHUAN, which enjoys a favourable climate, has produced a whole series of examples of so-called "three-dimensional farming" over the past five years. This development, which is new for China, is being supported by state authorities at all levels, and a broad range of relevant scientific disciplines have now become involved. Apart from achieving a general rise in food production - the per capita food production in China is currently below the world average - a further important task is to smooth the transition from subsistence farming, hitherto the dominant form, to increased reliance on the market for the distribution of food. This, however, will require a comprehensive expansion of all kinds of marketing facilities (methods of cultivation, processing and transport facilities, etc). It is precisely in the areas preceding and following the farming sector that there appear to be good prospects for co-operatives.
