Abstract:
The computer model GEMETA published by HAU (1985) to simulate epidemics of powdery mildew on barley was modified in two essential parts. First we altered the component of adult plant resistance to be more flexible and dependent on precipitation. The influence of the leaf age on susceptibility to powdery mildew was also changed so that water deficit stimulates the development of resistant tissue whereas a steady sufficient supply of water keeps the plant susceptible. The second modification of the model is the generalization to more cultivars by introducing cultivar specific parameters for the influence of the host on the relative efficiency of infection, the growth of colonies, the maximum colony size, the sporulation curve, and the maximum daily spore production. The extended model was validated by comparing observed and stimulated disease progress curves. Problems to generalize the model for the pathosystem wheat/powdery mildew are discussed.
