Abstract:
The application of low doses of cold-depressed neem-seed oil and of AZT-VR-K-enriched neem-seed oil on first instar nymphs of Schistocerca gregaria and on first, second and third instar nymphs of Locusta migratoria migratorioides resulted in moulting disturbances and in morphogenetic defects of wings, legs and antennae. Furthermore, the colour and behaviour of the locusts were influenced by spraying first and second instar nymphs. Grouped treated nymphs often developed into intermediate or green and brown forms similar to for the solitary phase whereas untreated nymphs showed the characteristic colour pattern of the gregarious phase. The behaviour of treated nymphs changed remarkably: they were much less active than untreated test insects. The possible endocrinological and other reasons for the change of colour of the locusts, which may be caused by active principles in neem-seed oil, and its potential for locust control are discussed.
