Abstract
Fitness of races and virulences and race diversity were estimated in field populations of Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei on two susceptible spring barley [Hordeum vulgare] cultivars. Race 23, virulent to four of eight resistance factors of agronomic importance, dominated throughout the epidemic on both ''Golden Promise'' and ''Villa''. Diversity of the two mildew populations decreased significantly during the first cycles of selection but not continuously over the season. Relative fitness of races was not constant. During and exceptionally cool period, races with ''Monte Cristo'' virulence (Va 9) increased at the expense of race 23. Regression analysis suggested that fitness of E. graminis f. sp. hordei was dependent on temperatures.
