Abstract:
A long-term experiment was carried out to study the adaptability to a marginal .gamma.-tocopherol supply (only 25% of the bioactivity of .alpha.-tocopherol) over four generations of Wistar rats of both sexes. The adaption was indicated (i.a.) by the biotransformation of .gamma.-tocopherol to .alpha.-tocopherol (a non-specific transmethylation) and by the thyroid function. Due to the "endogenous" .alpha.-tocopherol supply the decreased thyroid function of the first two generations could be normalized completely in the last two generations. The normalisation was documented by the increase of triiodothyronine and thyroxine in plasma, liver and lung. Despite the marginal tocopherol supply a sufficient tocopherol status was documented: the animals grew normal, no cases of death occurred and also the fertility was developed normally. So this study showed, that the animals were able to adapt to this state of metabolism over four generations.
