Abstract
The anatomy of the caecum of the subterranean mole rat Spalaz ehrenbergi was investigated at the macroscopic and light- and electron-microscopic levels. This superspecies consists of four chromosomal species inhabiting different climatic regions of Israel. The common morphological characteristics of the caecum of all four species are reported: the voluminous caecum is highly differentiated, most probably for a fermentation-vat function. A spiral fold runs through the entire caecum and increases the surface area of the caecum by a factor of two-fold. By means of morphometry possible indications of subtle differences among the four chromosomal species with reference to measurable parameters such as surface area and length were surmised, but interpreted with caution.
