We investigate the structure and the energy dependence of the ion-ion optical potential in the framework of the Walecka-model QHD-I, which contains only σ- and ω-mesons, by defining a relativistic generalization of the sudden approximation. For very light systems we see a complete analogy to non-relativstic calculations employing Skyrme forces. For heavier systems strong admixtures of Dirac sea states are observed. These can be removed by an appropriate projection on the positive spectrum of the instantaneous hamiltonian. In all cases, the potential shows a linear dependence on the impact kinetic energy for high rapidities. We discuss ideas to bring that closer to experimental results.
