Abstract: 

The production of η mesons and pions in intermediate energy heavy ion collisions has been calculated on the basis of a BUU calculation. We find an η to pion ratio of about 10⁻³ at 1 GeV/A for the primordial particles. Effects of the reabsorption of the η's through the N(1535) resonance are discussed.
