Abstract:
The disease progress of barley powdery mildew on the main shoot and the tillers was investigated in four spring barley cultivars under field conditions for 2 years. Over the entire season, the main culm was most often diseased. Mildew on tillers appeared almost exclusively on plants whose main shoots were also infected. The disease progress curves on the tillers did not correspond to the disease progress on the main shoot. The subpopulation on the tillers turned out to be almost as big as the one on the main shoot irrespective of the absolute level of disease severity. The age stratification of the lesions showed no distinct dependence on the type of shoot. For none of the features under investigation (neither quantity nor quality of infection), we could detect significant differences between cultivars. The consequence of these results for the composition of samples of main shoot and tillers is discussed.
