Abstract
The asymptotic behaviour of the delay-differential equation which VANDERPLANK (1963) proposed for the description of epidemics was investigated using the formulae of VANDERPLANK (1984) and JEGER (1986). The calculation according to VANDERPLANK yields more meaningful results and leads to a new interpretation of the threshold theorem for epidemics (iR > 1). Accordingly, the threshold theorem does not mean that the disease cannot increase if iR .ltoreq. 1, which is explained using an example for the control of a disease by a fungicide.
