Abstract
Barley powdery mildew populations on susceptible host cultivars were sampled from 1983 through 1986. 2225 individual conidial isolates and 666 progeny from ascospores were analyzed on a differential set comprising eight resistance factors. Two-way contingency tables were set up for all possible combinations of virulence factors and the deviation of observed and expected frequencies tested by the G-test of independence. The majority of virulence factors were in linkage equilibrium in both conidia and ascospores. In three cases (Ml(La)/Mla12,Mla12/Mlk+Mla7, Mla12/Mla9), virulence factors were negatively associated in the conidial but not the ascospore populations suggesting independent inheritance but a selective disadvantage of races carrying these virulence combinations. The previously reported linkage of virulence against Mlk and Mla9 was confirmed. No conclusive explanation was found for the negative assocaition of virulence against Mla6/Ml (La) and Ml (La)/Mla9 among ascospores. To further explore the influence of selection of virulence associations, it is suggested to perform controlled selection experiments with populations obtained from ascospore infections.
