Abstract
In long-term field experiments, the virulence dynamics of a population of Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei was examined on susceptible barley hosts. Race 23, a pathotype with the four virulences Vh, Vg, Va6, Va12 dominated in the field as well as in the surrounding crop area. All other pathotypes appeared only at low frequencies. Unnecessary virulence factors were frequent. They rarely caused detectable fitness costs (s), since only in a single case the decrease of an unnecessary virulence was significant (S1984/85 (Vk, Va7) = 0,14). The number of virulence factors per isolate was stabilized during the two periods of asexual reproduction (autumn to early summer) around the mean value of four factors per isolate. However, races with four virulence factors did not display higher fitness than races with three of five factors when race 23 was eliminated from the data set.
