Abstract
The need for methods to measure population density of epigeal predators which can be used instead of or in addition to pitfall trapping has been shown repeatedly. Flooding the inside of isolators with water as a method for measuring the population density of epigeal predatory arthropods on arable fields was compared with handsorting of soil samples. Flooding proved to be a good and quick method for measuring the population density of all small to medium sized common carabid species, epigeal spiders and the staphylinid genera Philonthus, Tachyporus and Tachinus (adults only). Time required, advantages, disadvantages and importance of the flooding method are discussed relative to other methods in current use.
