Abstract:
The tests in question are mostly performed by using pitfall traps. The well-known precautions to be considered when looking at the results are listed, because they are not in mind of all authors. But there are also new problems which make it very difficult to find significant results when using pitfall traps only. These problems are shown with two field tests as examples, performed in fields of winter wheat in Northern Germany, 1979 and 1983, and regarding data published recently: hyperactivity of beetles and emigration from treated plots; zero-activity of certain spider species; uncertainty of appearance of the target species and the difficulty of assessing larval populations properly; high need of area for the performance of the tests and long time for evaluating the results. The broad spectrum activity of dimethoate was confirmed here again. It is discussed, how the problems shown may be avoided by using different methods of testing.
