Abstract: 

The coupled channel formalism is extended to the treatment of closed channels and applied to the calculation of fusion cross sections for ¹²C + ¹²C. The importance of closed channels to the structure in the cross sections is shown, and the properties of an excitation of a closed channel are studied.
