Abstract:
On fields of winter wheat in Lower Saxony [East Germany], the abundance of saddle gall midge larvae in only one of two years was higher when winter wheat was the previous crop rather than sugar beets. In the other year the abundance was similar in both systems of crop rotations. The population dynamics of the saddle gall midge was studied in Schleswig-Holstein [West Germany] from 1975 to 1985 on a plot with wheat grown continuously since 1955. Two outbreaks occurred in these 11 years, a "latent" phase of 5 years being between. In spite of an optimal supply with host plants, the population of the saddle gall midge increased from one generation (year) to the next by the factor 5.7 at maximum. Rainfalls in July, host plant supply, and parasites has a certain effect on the population dynamics of the midge. But the "key factor" has not been found yet. In spite of this, to prevent outbreaks of the saddle gall midge, close cereal cropping should be avoided.
