Abstract
The effect of simulated and natural rain on colony growth and production of conidia as well as on germination and infection efficiency of daily sproduced conidia of individual colonies of Erysiphe graminis f. sp. tritici has been studied at 14 and 20.degree. C. In growth chambers, the development of colonies was not markedly affected by daily applications of varying levels of distilled water when applied as small droplets (< 2 mm .**GRAPHIC**. and low terminal velocity. However, the infection efficiency of newly formed conidia was reduced, mainly by a washing-off effect, and, thus, the number of daughter colonies lower. This could also be found in the field already with low intensities of rain. Heavy precipitation, through the high terminal velocity of large droplets, impaired colony growth partially or totally. But occasionally, even with 14.3 nmm rainfall, it was observed that, due to appropriate positioning, leaves with colonies were not directly wetted. In such cases, colonies remained dry and spore dispersal was not hampered.
