Abstract
Out of 8 varieties of Daucus carota (including wild carrots) with differences in embryogenic potential 2 were chosen for determinations of the concentration of endogenous free IAA and of cytokinin activity at 3 stages of somatic embryogenesis in petiole explants. In the highly embryogenic variety Rotin a several fold higher IAA concentration as well as a higher cytokinin activity was detected at the transition to an embryogenic state as compared with the variety Lobbericher, in which it was not possible to induce embryogenesis. Also the ratio of IAA concentration to cytokinin activity at various cultural stages of the two varieties differed.
