Abstract:
All of 16 Basidiomycetes tested proved to be restrictedly thiamine heterotroph; the observed poor vegetative development during a growth on thiamine free media is caused by a low fungal thiamine production. An optimal development of the fungi requires vitamine B1 concentrations above 1 to 10 .mu.g/l in the substrate, respectively above 0.5 to 1.0 .mu.g/g dry-w. in the mycelium. Lower B1 concentrations result in an increased acidification of the substrate, which is caused by an enhanced cellular accumulation and secretion of pyruvate. The fungal thiamine production is restricted by a limited synthesis of the pyrimidine intermediate in contrast to the thiazole moiety of the vitamine; thus in many species a thiamine deficiency can be compensated by a supply of only the pyrimidine constituent of the vitamine. The vegetative development of all Basidiomycetes tested does not differ, if both vitamine intermediates.sbd.instead of the whole thiamine molecule.sbd.are used for the fungal nutrition; however, in some cases distinctly higher thiamine concentrations in the substrates and in the mycelia can be observed, when thiamine intermediates are supplied. The reasons for this apparently illogical result are discussed.
