Abstract
In this investigation the correlations between complaints for exterior and performance traits were calculated for young German Landrace boars and their full sibs at testing stations of the Hessian Association for Pig Breeding. Young boars showing complaints for exteriors at licensing were clearly older, showed generally higher daily gains and had low scores in external appearance. The only exception was in daily gain, where young boars were scored as typeless or poor muscled. These animals showed lower daily gains compared to the controls. Young boars with complaints about legs showed a smaller backfat thickness and higher selection index. This negative correlation between backfat thickness and complaints for legs was confirmed by the lower fatness in full sibs of the complainted boars. Significant differences between complainted and non-complainted young boars were found in backfat thickness and selection index. Full sibs of young boars complainted for legs showed a significant longer body length in progeny testing. No clear relations were found between complaints for legs, part of ham, and meat color. The heritabilities estimated for complaints of exterior were found to be 0-0.24. Using reduced material a heritability of 0-0.42 was calculated. The low values were received when the complaints were not clearly defined (i.e., weak hind legs, weak legs). In some complaints greater differences between total and reduced material were found indicating the influence of preselection.
