Abstract:
Soil analysis at short intervals allowed to study the dynamics of Na saturation in the topsoil in dependence on brackish water applications in the moist year of 1981 as well as in the comparatively dry years of 1982 and 1983. Na saturation was found to rise markedly (in dry periods up to 73%) and decline again in autumn and winter. The annual course of soil aggregate stability was generally positive from spring to late summer, but significantly disturbed and diminished by brackish water sprinkling. After dry summers in which more brackish water had been applied the general decline in aggregate stability was stronger on the plots sprinkled with brackish water than on the nonsprinkled plots. Negative differences were even found in the following spring. The total aggregate content was slightly reduced by the dispensing effect of the sodium ions.
