Abstract
The epithelium of the bovine uterine glands was investigated by EM on the 1st, 3rd, 7th, 14th and 21st day of the sex cycle. The 1-3 layered epithelium of the glands is composed to light and dark cells with dark cells predominating. Cycle dependent changes of the ultrastructure can be observed mainly in the dark cells. The surface plasma lemma of this cell type changes equally as much on the 1st, 3rd and 14th day of the cycle, and it is projected by a more or less microvillar margin. On the 7th day the cell surface frequently shows apical cytoplasmic protrusions, this fact points too an apocrine secretory activity. Apart from this on the 7th day the dark cell shows an enlarged Golgi-apparatus with many secretory vacuoles and dilated cisterns of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. All this may be a sign of enhanced secretory activity. The volume of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum increases between the 1st 14th day of the cycle. On the 14th day the number of primary lysosomes, multivesicular bodies and cytosegresomes, compared to the 3rd or 7th day of the cycle increases, this may be connected to the degenerative process, which takes place in the late corpus luteum stage.
