Abstract
In the West Eifel, the relationship between chemical composition of important fodder plants and browsing intensity (browsing number as a percentage), which varies with phenological phases, by red deer were studied. The water (WG), crude fiber (RF), total N (G-N), protein N (P-N) and ash (AG) contents of the fodder plants for early spring (V), spring (L), summer (H) and early autumn (F) were determined. The place value of individual chemical components for the seasonally fluctuating browsing intensity of the fodder plants as well as the importance of the chemical components for the choice of feeding in relation to the different seasons within the group of woody plants (H) and of herb plants (K) were examined statistically. For spring, when N content and raw protein content reach their maximum, significant correlations between water, total N, protein N and ash contents and the browsing intensity within the group of woody plants were shown. In herb plants, raw fiber content and browsing intensity were negatively correlated, ash content and browsing intensity were positively correlated in summer. The gramineae with a feeding role, Molinia caerulea, Agrostis gigantea, Calamagrostis epigejos and Phalaris arundinacea, distinguish themselves by broad correspondence between the chemical components studied and their function as fodder. Absent or negative correlations between chemical composition and browsing intensities corresponded in woody plants with their function as winter browsing.
